The contest area is very demanding, both in architectural and in urban aspects. The history of architecture proved many times that outstanding architectural creations come into being in highly difficult locations. Responding to the contest task we tried to combine rigid expectations of the contest organizers with the vicinity of world’s master class architecture. Such neighbourhood requires special treatment. We tried to equalize respect to the environment and unique architectural heritage with the requirements for the new complex to be both exceptional and innovative. The final effect of our research is a comprehensive design, which consist of following parts: a Main Building, a two-storey Central Square and a building of Media Center Lume. The scheme integrates and complements the existing buildings of the Aalto University. The whole composition is based on two axes. The first one- a view axis- repeats the direction of the present Otaniamentie Street and finds it’s culminating point at the Main lecture hall of the former Main building. The second one- a communication axis- is parallel to the Aalto Library building and connects the designed central square with the future open area, which will replace the present Otaniamentie Street. All essential elements of the project have been located along these two axes.
