The proposal of Teatr Nowy is developed around the inner courtyard and along neighbouring Madalińskiego, Sandomierska and Melsztyńska streets. In order to protect the space of art from distractions from the outside, the walls of the new buildings and the existing post industrial facade are shaped as an outer concrete shell. In such way, the space inside is isolated from the hustle and bustle of the city and at the same time remains well connected to it.
To comply with the client’s brief, it was crucial to implement the idea of openness of the form throughout the building. The key element of the proposal towering over the yard appears as a transparent volume of educational and rehearsal rooms, allowing to get an insight into artistic process while revealing an inviting public space beneath.
The interior of the ground level is closed by translucent walls, so that the inside of the building smoothly spreads to the outside. The central courtyard becomes a vivid open-air foyer, informal stage, meeting point in a garden.
